Zelenograd,
Russia (Since
July 1992) Zelenograd
is one of the prefects of Moscow with a population of approximately 180,000, 40%
having advanced graduate degrees. It has been a major industrial center for electronics
and microelectronics, producing much of the Russian space program's technology.
Blending technological advancement and environmental concerns, Zelenograd (which
means "green city" in Russian) has created a green belt to preserve its natural
surroundings. Zelenograd is home to the Moscow Institute of Electronic
Technology and to the International Institute for Business Education (IBE), formerly
Zelenograd Business College, co-founded by the University of Tulsa. TU and IBE
regularly exchange students and faculty. Numerous adult exchanges and
youth trips have reinforced the partnership's ties. In 2005, Three Booker
T. Washington students traveled to Zelenograd, as part of an educational exchange
with Zelenograd School #1150. During their visit, the students attended Russian
classes and visted historical and cultural attractions. Past visits have included
the Tulsa Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, which conducted a thematic youth
exchange with the Red Cross Chapter in Zelenograd through a grant from Sister
Cities International.
