(Since
October 1980)
Kaohsiung, Taiwan's second
largest city, is a major industrial center with an international port ranking
as the third largest container port in the world. With a population of 1.5 million,
the city is the center of the country's shipbuilding, steel, and petroleum industries.
Kaohsiung has enjoyed unprecedented prosperity and development. This
August, Kaohsiung is sending its assistant protocol officer to Tulsa to particpate
in a one-month internship. She will intern with Tulsa Global Alliance, the City
Council and the Mayor's office during her time in Tulsa. She will stay with a
host family and participate in a variety of cultural activities. In
July 2005, Tulsa Police Department's Mounted Patrol Unit was invited to Taiwan
to help celebrate the implementation of a mounted patrol in Kaohsiung's Police
Bureau. During the celebration, Tulsa officers, Lori Miller, BK Williams, Greg
Evans and Sergeant Dave Davis rode in a Parade and then joined Kaohsiung's Mounted
Patrol for a demonstration on Cijin Beach. Officers also visted the Kaohsiung
Police Bureau and other cultural sites. Tulsa has participated in the
Taiwan Area Games, bringing home four medals. The festivities surrounding the
games provide a glimpse of Chinese culture and tradition. Not surprisingly, the
Kaohsiung Youth Folk Sports Troupe has dazzled Tulsa audiences in their Tulsa
performances.
Kaohsiung
youth have participated in the Sister Cities Young Artists program. Tulsa has
received visitors from Taiwan including several well-known artists and the curator
of the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Art. Tulsa
